Uttappa Uttappa Don’t worry Uttappa….

Uttapam

Whenever my mom makes Uttapam at home, my younger brother start singing “Uttappa Uttappa Don’t worry Uttappa….tum ho hamare uttappa” on the lines of “Mustafa Mustafa don’t worry Mustafa , hum hein tumhare Mustafa”.  He simply loves the dish. Our being a typical North Indian family none of the member liked uttapam and had never tasted it, had never seen it however, we had heard about it. About five years back one of our neighbors, who were South Indian, invited my brother and me for Sunday breakfast and offered us delicious looking Pizzas (but they were uttapam). My brother said “Didi, these home made pizzas looks so yummy and I can’t wait to try them. Soon they were in our plate and when we took the first bite we were taken by a surprise….. this is not a pizza, but whatever it is its delicious.

When we came back home, we explained everything to mom just like every kid does. She asked us what was it if not pizza, my brother and me were looking at each other and had no answer. Next day when Dad went to office and we to school, mom got a chance to talk to Menon aunty (our neighbor) and then she told her that it was uttapam.

Without loosing a single second, she (mom) quickly asked her about the ingredients, recipe and the process. Next Sunday was a big surprise for my brother and me.. this time was Dad’s first time…. And he loved it too. Since then Uttapams are our regular Sunday breakfast dish and “Uttappa Uttappa Don’t worry Uttappa….tum ho hamare uttappa” our family jingle
